Kurz vor der Veröffentlichung ihres vierten Albums „ROMANCE“ am 23. August 2024 veröffentlichten die Iren von Fontaines D.C. mit „In The Modern World“ den vierten Vorab-Song des Albums. Frontmann Grian Chatten schrieb das zentrale Stück des Albums während eines unbeschreiblichen 10-tägigen Aufenthaltes allein in Los Angeles Anfang 2023, als er sich von einer Tournee erholte. Es ist, wie er sagt, wahrscheinlich sein Lieblingssong. Das üppige, schmachtende Los Angeles von Lana Del Rey ist ebenso präsent wie der verfallende Glamour alter Hollywood-Soundtracks und Filme wie „Sunset Boulevard“ mit Gloria Swanson in der Hauptrolle. Es ist Fontaines D.C. in seiner filmischsten Form, aufgebaut um das Bild eines fiktiven Paares, das inmitten des Armageddons zusammen ist und eine fantastische Welt umarmt, die von Verleugnung und Romantik genährt wird.
Für das dazugehörige Musikvideo arbeitete die Band erneut mit der renommierten Filmemacherin Luna Carmoon (Hoard, Shagbands, Nosebleed) zusammen, die bereits das Video zu „Here’s The Thing“ vom neuen Album drehte. Mit dem Schauspieler Ewan Mitchell in der Hauptrolle, versetzt Carmoons ebenso filmisches Video „In The Modern World“ in das brutale, leidenschaftliche und fetischistische Theater eines Car Jitsu-Kampfes.
