Das Grunge-Projekt Temple of the Dog wurde 1990 von Chris Cornell – nach dem Tod seines ehemaligen Mitbewohners und Freundes Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone) – in Seattle gegründet und zwei Jahre später aufgelöst. Nachdem Wood am 19. März 1990 an einer Überdosis Heroin starb, schrieb Cornell Say Hello 2 Heaven und Reach Down, zwei Songs, die nicht zu der Musik von Soundgarden passten, die er jedoch auch nicht verwerfen wollte.
